Have you ever been at a networking event, or met an old friend and got totally thrown off when asked the question, “Michelle, so what do you do?” Maybe you started to fumble a bit figuring out HOW to explain what you do, or you started explaining what certifications you have, or you told them you are a coach or therapist (as if that explains anything ?).

I can practically see you nodding your head and smiling recognizing the description. I used to fumble with this question almost to the extent that I felt relieved if they didn’t ask. There has been countless occasions where I felt I did a really clumsy job explain my services. As you might imagine this was not good for business!!!

We SoulRICH™ entrepreneurs are so in love with what we do, and we really want to communicate all our knowledge, passion and skills in answering the question. It often ends up in an answer that is confusing, boring and/or very long. Many struggle with how to describe what they do in a way that IGNITES people’s curiosity.

Since the lifeblood of your business is clients and partnerships, you need to master how to talk about what you do in a way that creates interest. I have found that the key is to understand what they’re really asking (-and it’s not what they’re saying).

What they’re really asking is: “How can you help me, or someone I know, to solve our challenges”. Even though this might “hurt”, they are not interested in you – they are interested in finding out if you can help them find a solution to their problems.

Let’s translate “the thing you do” into a juicy, hot statement - making what you do relevant, intriguing and interesting. Don’t worry – it won’t take a lot of time or effort. In just 3 MINUTES you can craft an answer that will make it crystal clear to everyone exactly what you do – and the best thing is that it will boost your business by attracting new ideal clients!



Are you ready to start?

Just follow the 5 easy steps to craft your statement describing what you do:

1. Who do you work with?
•"I help/teach/show/support…………"

2. Briefly describe the problem they are having.
•Be specific in describing what they want to move away (from).

3. Say what you do as it relates to their specific problem.
•Name a positive change they will experience when working with you.

4. Finish with the solution.
•“so that they…..” which identifies the situation they will experience once the problem is solved.

5. Optional question at the end.
•You end with a question if your intention is to get referrals.
•Do you know anyone ……..(link it back to the problem in bullet 2)



Let me give you a couple of examples to make it easier for you to craft your statement. I have added corresponding numbers in brackets to make it easy for you to follow the template.

Examples:

“I show solo-preneurs (1) who are struggling with their marketing (2) how to attract more high-paying clients (3) – so they can make more money (4) with their business”

Do you know a business owner who wants more high paying clients? (5)



“I show new moms (1) how to lose those last stubborn 10 pounds (2) so they can fit into their skinny jeans (4) without starving themselves or avoiding their favorite food (3).”

Do you know a new mom struggling with the last 10 pounds?



“I teach people (1) with sleeping problems (2) how to relax (3) so they can wake up rested and rejuvenated (4)”

Do you know anyone who has problem sleeping at night (5)?


Finally you have a powerful way to respond to the question “What do you do?” Your answer will ignite interest and attract a continuous flow of ideal clients – because finally it is crystal clear to everyone you meet, exactly what you do!



Action Steps:

• Use the template and create your juicy, hot statement explaining what you do

• Practice on 10 people this week

• Sign up a new client
